Looking for work

24 – Looking for Work

Looking for work was never challenging for me.  Till now.  This time it was different.

I had worked as a Structural detailer and draftsperson for more than 20 year. I had always worked in Structural Steel with 3D modeling programs such as SDS2, Tekla and Revit.  All very powerful programs to allow good Structural drawing flowing, and my experience made me a Senior in my filled.

It was now exhausting!  My career became a job.

I was no longer happy cooped up in an office as a Senior Civil Engineer Structural Technology.

If I was gonna go back to work, I needed something new.

Soul Searching

At 43, I had worked 23 years in Structural Engineering.  For the last few years, I could not imagine myself still sitting in an office 8 hours a day, doing the same thing for another 22 years before retirement.

Although my work was challenging in every project I worked on, it was no longer exciting or motivating.

I used to wake up and feel energetic.  Before driving to work, I would know exactly what was waiting for me on my desk.   I would know what meeting was waiting for me.  What questions I had.  I was on top of my game.

I was better then my co-worker.  Yup, I just said that.

Although I had 5 years of experienced additional to my co-worker, I had less years of employment with the company than him.  I was also underpaid “for fairness of my co-worker”.  (my supervisors words, not mine).

It was time to go.

My decision that day was prompt.  I was not scared.  I was not hesitant.  In fact I felt relieved, and ready for the next chapter in my life.

Looking for work

I’ve been wanted to have my own company of flipping houses.  I haven’t given up.  It wasn’t going as quick as I wanted to.

Even with BlackcardU helping me out, I was far  from being financially  independent and needed to have some sort of income coming in.

Plan B = get a job

When looking for work, a few steps are required.

Step 1 – Update resume

Step 2 – Find the best online job search in your region

Step 3 – Apply to interested job in hope to get interview

Step 4 – Write cover pages (optional)

Step 5 – follow up

Step 6 – Repeat.

Ugh!

I’ve applied for local Delivery jobs.  I love driving.  I need the work out of moving around and lifting stuff.  And  nothing hurts to smile when delivering a package to a costumer.

According to google:

“When you smile, your brain releases tiny molecules called neuropeptides to help fight off stress”

I was invited for a Road test for a UPS delivery job I’ve applied for.  Although my driving passes, I lost points when asked about any physical passed injury.  One of my knees has been bothering me for a few months and need to exercise it every night.

I’ve applied for Dispatching job, but didn’t get much replied back.  The only Dispatched that I’ve heard of was my local 911 NB team.  I have interview coming up!

Pepsico’s looking for workers, was told they pay well!

I was basically applying to any interesting jobs I saw.

To be honest, I can’t member the last time I actually applied for a job that was posted online.

My past search for job was simply showing up at Engineering firms that I know had Structural Engineers working there.  Regardless if they were currently looking to hire or not.

Why couldn’t I do the same now?  Instead of Engineering firms, I simply needed to apply to companies I wanted to work for.

I then send my resume to Shawn from Monctonhomebuyers

Fingers Crossed

Shawn and I had a phone call a few months ago.  In our conversation, we had shortly talked about possibly working together.  Not sure if he was talking seriously or not, I decided to make it official and send him my resume showing my interest in his company.

He invited me to a virtual Zoom call interview.  The interview went well in general.  However we realized in our conversation that neither of us knows what to expecting form either of us.  He had never hired an employee before.  although he was looking for someone to help him, or rather take he’s place as Project Manager on some of he’s projects.

Having a Coordination background, I’m pretty optimistic I can do the job.  However, I propose not to pay me for the first few months, and he proposed I visit some of his project and discuss pricing, details and finishes.  This agreement is simply to see if I’m a good fit.  For my peace of mind and his.

I’m currently on EI at the moment, I have some sort of income and for the moment do not need to get payed.  Besides I’d be making more being on EI than getting paid by him for now.

I’ve worked my ass of for 23 years paying the government for this EI.  I deserve it.

This agreement with Shawn is good.  It does not obligate either of us to any commitment, and it simply give us time to take is slow with his company.

I have high hopes on this agreement and I can’t wait to visit my first jobsite with him and his wife.
